Celebrate July 20

There are so many exciting Celebrations this month!  Some of my favorites are today July 20th!
  • Moon Day (Armstrong and Aldrin land on moon in 1969)
  • Chess Day
  • Ice Cream Soda Day
  • Ugly Truck Contest Day
  • National Lollipop Day
  • National Nap Day
  • Japan Marine Day
  • Columbian Independence Day
My personal pick of the day.......Today is such a hard pic again!  Japan's Marine Day is such a fun Holiday to celebrate!  Moon Day is so American and a fun Celebration and so educational.  What to do what to do....  Okay here we go its going to be (drum roll please) Moon Day! (but, to celebrate Columbia's Independence we will be having Carne' Guisadao (Columbian Stewed Beef.) for dinner)

Truly in my heart I wish I could Celebrate Nap Day but, I don't think my kids would like that one very much!

First off today the kids are dressing up like astronauts my oldest son has always wanted to be a astronaut so he really gets into this!  We break out bike helmets, gloves, goggles, even flippers.  Its fun to allow your kids imaginations to flow.  See what they think a astronaut looks like.  At our house we have a pair of moon shoes. These shoes have been a family favorite for years!  The kids each take turn pretending to walk on the moon in their creative Astronaut attire. Below is a picture of our "Moon Shoes"

Today we also watched the video of the first Moon Landing check out this fun link on youtube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMINSD7MmT4   I loved watching this video with my kids!  It sparked so many questions.  Are their aliens on the moon? Could we visit the moon? Is it cold or hot on the moon?  Lots of fun answering and researching together on the internet.

Then we all went in the backyard and each found a rock we could turn into a "Moon Rock." Back in the house we decorate, paint, color (pretty much anything you would like to do) to turn this plain old rock into your very own and unique moon rock!

Today we will also be making and playing with "Moon Sand"  warning this is a OUTSIDE project! Moon sand just like most sand is not very much fun to clean up!  Most of you have probably heard of "Moon Sand" they sell it in local toy stores, online, and on TV.  I prefer making my own (because I am cheap)

Here is my recipe for homemade Moon Sand

6 cups of play sand (They sell this at Lowe's, Home Depot, and Walmart)
3 cups of cornstarch
1 1/2 cups of cold water
Step one: Mix the water and cornstarch together thoroughly, this will take a few minutes to get it nice and smooth.
Step two: Gradually mix in the sand, one cup at a time. You'll need to really work it in with your fingers.
Step three: Add your favorite color of Koolaid (this adds color and makes it smell good)
Step four: Play with it!
When you're all done, pop it in an airtight container.
When you next play with it, you'll need to revive it with 2-3 tablespoons of water. Just sprinkle it over and work it in.
Have so much fun playing with your Moon Sand, making your very own Moon Rocks, Dressing up like a Astronaut, and Learning about Space!
What an exciting Day!  I have been sing "Rocket Man" and "I'd like to visit the moon" all day long.  I'm even celebrating in my subconscious!
